Overview:
Throughout the unit students will be given a variety of opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned. KICA will be evenly weighted in the complete evaluation of students’ work in the unit. Individual lessons will include diagnostic assessment (intro discussions and questions), formative assessment (group discussions and activities) and summative assessment. Various forms of assessment will be supported pre-reading questions, during reading questions, and after reading questions. Below are the assessment strategies we will use to evaluate assigned course material.
Journals: 25%
Throughout the unit response journals will be assigned that address particular aspects of the novel addressed. These are meant for students to further engage with the text and develop their own voice and opinion on what they are reading. These will be submitted either online (under the forum tab) or as a physical copy for students without internet access. Journal responses allow us to formatively assess if students understand the material. Students are encouraged to comment on each other's posts and engage in a discussion.

This assignment uses authentic assessment to have students perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of the knowledge and skills developed in the unit. Various options are offered that cater to all learning styles and preferences. Providing a variety of options also helps with accommodating students with exceptionalities.
Quiz 1: 5% Quiz 2: 5% Test 1: 10% Test 2: 10% (30%)
Quizzes and tests do not need to be the focal point of evaluation but are important for assessing reading comprehension. Short quizzes will test student’s knowledge and understanding in the form of multiple choice and true or false questions. The questions will be designed using explicitly what was taught in class and incorporated in the backward design of our learning goals. The two tests will consist of questions that promote higher-level thinking and the application of what was learned throughout the course of the unit.
Portfolio: 25%
A portfolio will be used to collect in class work and extension activities completed outside of class. Towards the end of the unit students will be required to pick a piece of work they most enjoyed, edit it, and turn it into a polished piece to be graded. Literature circles will be used for peer-editing sessions and develop a greater understanding of the writing process. Portfolios provide opportunities to measure the student’s growth over time, as well as set short and long-term goals. Using a portfolio as a form of assessment will help students develop self-assessment skills and take ownership of their learning.
